The Silvretta Arena: Cross-Border Skiing
Ischgl occupies the upper end of the Paznaun valley in Tyrol at 1,377 metres, with its highest point at 2,872 metres. The ski area – branded the Silvretta Arena – is bi-national, connecting Ischgl in Austria with Samnaun in Switzerland across the border ridge. The combined area covers 239 kilometres of pistes served by 45 modern lifts.
The terrain is overwhelmingly suited to intermediate and advanced skiers: long, high-altitude red and black runs make the most of the consistent snowfall at elevation. The Piz Val Gronda and the Velilltal area are highlights for advanced riders looking for challenge, while the wide, well-groomed motorway runs down to the village suit intermediates looking to build confidence and mileage.
Crucially, the Silvretta Arena sits almost entirely above 2,000 metres, giving it outstanding snow reliability. It regularly skis well into May when lower-altitude resorts have long since closed.
The Concert and Après-Ski Culture
Ischgl is arguably the most famous après-ski destination in the world. The Top of the Mountain concerts – held at the start and end of every season on the Idalpe plateau at 2,320 metres – have featured artists including Elton John, Kylie Minogue, Shakira, and The Killers. These events attract tens of thousands of visitors and are part of what has made Ischgl a globally recognised name beyond the skiing world.
In-resort, the après-ski scene starts directly on the slopes and continues into the village through the evening. The Kitzloch, Fire & Ice, and Schatzi bar are among the most well-known venues. The village itself is compact, well-equipped, and entirely oriented around a premium alpine experience.
Cross-Border Shopping in Samnaun
The Swiss side of the ski area – Samnaun – is a customs-free duty-free zone, which means a full range of Swiss watches, perfumes, spirits, and luxury goods can be purchased tax-free. Skiing over for a shopping detour and returning to Ischgl for dinner is an established tradition among regular visitors.
