From Munich Airport it is 147 km by road to Söll, 153 km to Ellmau and 161 km to Westendorf. On a clear road that is about 1 hour 35 minutes to Söll, 1 hour 45 minutes to Ellmau and 1 hour 50 minutes to Westendorf. Almost all of it is motorway. Only the last 10 to 15 km are on the valley roads below the Wilder Kaiser, and that short stretch is the one to allow time for in winter.
How far and how long
| From Munich Airport to | Distance | Clear-road drive | Leaves the motorway at |
|---|---|---|---|
| Söll | 147 km | about 1 h 35 min | Kufstein Süd |
| Ellmau | 153 km | about 1 h 45 min | Kufstein Süd |
| Westendorf | 161 km | about 1 h 50 min | Wörgl Ost |
These are driving times with no traffic, measured from the airport to the center of each village. They are the floor, not a promise. Snow, a busy changeover day or a queue at the motorway exit all add to them, which is why we plan every transfer with time in hand and follow your flight, so the driver is in the arrivals hall when you have landed and not when the timetable said you would.
Scheffau lies between Söll and Ellmau and Going is just beyond Ellmau, both on the same road. A transfer to either follows the Ellmau route.
The road from the airport
The drive starts in the arrivals hall, where your driver waits with a sign carrying your name. From the airport the route runs south on the A 92 and A 9, around the east of Munich on the A 99 ring, and onto the A 8 in the direction of Salzburg. After about 44 km on the A 8 it turns south at the Inntal junction onto the A 93, which follows the river Inn to the Austrian border at Kiefersfelden. That is 25 km, and by then the mountains are on both sides of the road.
Across the border the motorway becomes the Austrian A 12. From here the three villages part ways.
- Söll and Ellmau: off the A 12 after 6 km at Kufstein Süd, then the B 173 over the Eiberg. The Eiberg road is a little under 10 km long and comes down into Söll. Ellmau is further east along the B 178.
- Westendorf: the fastest way stays on the A 12 for another 11 km to Wörgl Ost, then takes the B 178 and the B 170 up the Brixental through Hopfgarten.
We take you to the address on your booking, whether that is a hotel, a chalet or an apartment, so the drive ends at your door and not at a bus stop in the village.
Tolls and the vignette
German motorways are free for cars. Austrian motorways need a vignette, with a handful of exceptions, and one of those exceptions is on this route. The motorway operator ASFINAG lists the A 12 between the border at Kufstein and the Kufstein Süd junction among the sections exempt from the vignette. So the drive to Söll and Ellmau uses no vignette road at all. The fastest way to Westendorf does, for the 11 km between Kufstein Süd and Wörgl Ost.
On a transfer none of this is yours to arrange. Our prices include all tolls, and the price quoted when you book is the price you pay.
Where winter slows the drive
The motorway part of this route is rarely the problem. The Eiberg road is. It is the short way from the Inn valley to Söll, Scheffau, Ellmau and Going, and in winter it is one of the busiest regional roads in Tyrol: the state’s own count at Schwoich averaged 11,656 vehicles a day in 2023. On the days when most guests arrive and leave, this is the stretch to allow time for.
Austria also has a winter equipment rule. From 1 November to 15 April, cars must be on winter tires on all four wheels whenever there is snow, slush or ice on the road. It applies to every vehicle on these roads, ours included.
Good to know
Give us your flight number when you book. We follow the arrival and move the pick-up to the actual landing time at no extra cost, and 60 minutes of free waiting are included from the moment you land.
The drive back to Munich Airport
The way home is the same road with one difference. Germany checks vehicles entering the country, and the crossing on this route, Kiefersfelden on the A 93, is one of the three on the Austrian border that the German motoring club ADAC names as most prone to queues. In September 2026 ADAC reported that the checks are planned to continue until 15 March 2027.
How long the check takes depends on the traffic, and ADAC says it regularly leads to queues. So the pick-up time for a departure matters more than the one for an arrival. Road transport in the Alps is affected by weather, traffic and road closures, and we recommend a comfortable margin before a departing flight. When you choose the pick-up time for your flight home, count the border in.
On the morning itself the driver arrives about 15 minutes before the booked time, and 15 minutes of free waiting are included from the agreed time. Keep passports or identity cards within reach in the vehicle, not in the luggage.
Common questions
How long is the transfer from Munich Airport to Ellmau?
About 1 hour 45 minutes on a clear road, for 153 km. Snow, heavy traffic over the Eiberg and busy changeover days add to that, so we plan the transfer with time in hand.
How long is the transfer from Munich Airport to Söll?
About 1 hour 35 minutes on a clear road, for 147 km. Söll is the first SkiWelt village the road reaches after leaving the motorway at Kufstein Süd.
How long is the transfer from Munich Airport to Westendorf?
About 1 hour 50 minutes on a clear road, for 161 km. The fastest route leaves the motorway at Wörgl Ost and runs up the Brixental through Hopfgarten.
Do we need to buy a vignette for the transfer?
No. Alp Roads prices include all tolls. The route to Söll and Ellmau uses only the stretch of the A 12 that is exempt from the vignette, between the border and Kufstein Süd.
Does the price go up if the drive takes longer than planned?
No. The price quoted when you book is the price you pay, unless you change the booking. Traffic and weather on the day do not change it.
Is there a border check between Munich Airport and the SkiWelt?
Germany checks vehicles entering from Austria, so the check is on the way back to the airport, at Kiefersfelden on the A 93. Allow for it when choosing a pick-up time for your flight home and keep your travel documents within reach.
Do you drive to Scheffau and Going as well?
Yes. Both are on the same road as Söll and Ellmau, and we take you to the address on your booking. Enter the address on the booking page to see the price.
