Many visitors discover the Alps in summer for the first time and return every year. The reasons are straightforward: the scenery is as dramatic as in winter, the villages are quieter, the accommodation is less expensive, and the range of activities is vast. Walking trails that are buried under snow in February are open and accessible from late May to mid-October. Cycling infrastructure throughout Tyrol, Salzburger Land, and the Swiss valleys is world-class.
The Tyrolean Alps offer some of Europe's most accessible high-altitude walking, from short valley-floor walks to multi-day hut-to-hut routes. Innsbruck itself sits at the foot of the Nordkette range, with cable car access to trails above 2,000 metres. The Ötztal, Zillertal, and Stubaital are within 30-90 minutes of Innsbruck Airport.
The Salzkammergut lake district - centred on Hallstatt, Gmunden, Bad Ischl, and the Wolfgangsee - lies between Salzburg and the Styrian hills. It is one of Austria's most visited summer regions, and for good reason: the combination of clear Alpine lakes, forested hillsides, and historic villages is difficult to match in central Europe. The region is poorly served by public transport for anyone arriving from outside Austria with luggage.
The EuroVelo network and regional cycling routes through the Salzach valley and beyond attract cyclists from across Europe. Reaching the start of a cycle route - or the guesthouse at the end of a stage - often requires a transfer that public transport cannot conveniently provide.
Bad Gastein, Zell am See, Kitzbühel, and Seefeld operate as fully active summer resorts, with golf courses, wellness facilities, and extensive walking networks. Many guests who know these destinations from ski season return in summer and find them equally worthwhile.

Bicycles can be transported on AlpRoads summer transfers. Bikes are carried in a roof rack or enclosed trailer where vehicle configuration requires it; in larger MPVs and Minivans, bicycles may be carried internally with wheels removed. Please indicate the number of bicycles when booking so that the appropriate vehicle and equipment are reserved.
Hiking poles, large rucksacks, climbing equipment, golf bags, and other oversized items are accommodated at no additional charge. As with ski equipment in winter, the total equipment volume should be indicated at booking so the correct vehicle class is assigned.
Summer itineraries are often less linear than ski-week arrivals. If you need a transfer that includes more than one stop - dropping luggage at a hotel in Zell am See before continuing to a trailhead, for example - AlpRoads can accommodate multi-stop journeys. For urban destinations, trains and buses are often entirely adequate. The Alpine region is different in several important ways:
Many of the most popular Alpine destinations are not on a main rail line. Hallstatt has no direct rail connection. Ischgl is not served by rail. Verbier is not on the main Swiss network. Reaching these places by public transport requires combinations of train, post bus, and taxi that are feasible for an unencumbered solo traveller but impractical for a family with luggage.
Regional Alpine bus services typically run every hour at best, and not at all late in the evening or early in the morning. A flight arriving at Salzburg at 21:30 has no onward public transport to Zell am See.
Carrying suitcases, child equipment, bicycles, or hiking gear across multiple connections is genuinely difficult. A private transfer removes that problem entirely.

AlpRoads operates year-round. The service runs continuously from January through December, covering all Alpine destinations regardless of season. Summer is a busy period – particularly July and August – and bookings should be made in advance during peak summer weeks.
Yes. Bicycles can be transported on AlpRoads transfers. Please indicate the number of bicycles when booking. Depending on vehicle class and the total number of passengers and luggage, bikes may be carried internally or on a roof-mounted rack or trailer. There is no additional charge for bicycle transport, but it must be declared at booking so the correct equipment is available.
Yes. AlpRoads can accommodate multi-stop itineraries – for example, dropping one passenger at a hotel before continuing to another destination, or making a scheduled stop en route. One-way transfers are available and are the standard booking type. You are not required to book a return journey. If you do want to arrange both legs, AlpRoads can confirm both at the time of booking for convenience.
